Biography

Franghiz Ali-Zadeh (Azerbaijani: Fir?ngiz ?lizad?, Cyrillic: ??????? ???-????; born 29 May 1947, Baku) is an Azerbaijani composer and pianist. She is best known for her works which combine the musical tradition of the Azerbaijani mugam and 20th century Western compositional techniques, especially those of Arnold Schönberg and Gara Garayev (a.k.a. Kara Karayev). Ali-Zadeh studied the piano and composition at the Baku Conservatory, from which she graduated as a pianist in 1970, and as a composer in 1972.
